ABOUT OUR SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
Archbishop Molloy High School's Summer Enrichment Program provides a unique and exciting opportunity for rising 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th graders to enjoy fun, hands-on summer activities while learning about topics and ideas in which they are interested. Students can choose from a variety of daily “Majors” and “Minors.” Each day students will learn about dynamic concepts and engage in fun lessons taught by outstanding Molloy teachers. At Molloy, we believe that children have limitless potential when they are provided the tools to build new skills and the opportunity to explore their own intellectual curiosity. STAFF
Each major and minor will be taught by a member of Molloy's outstanding and knowledgeable faculty and staff. Each instructor is vetted, highly educated, skilled, and knowledgeable in both the background of each topic and best practices of teaching and engaging students. Classes will be small, and students will be provided group and individualized instruction.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Each student must select a “major” and “minor.” They will attend the same major and minor classes every day during each session. We welcome students who wish to sign up for both weeks but highly encourage students to select different “majors” and “minors” for their second week. Every day will consist of a major and minor activity, a small group creativity/innovation/critical thinking challenge, and lunch (students will bring their own lunches). All participants will receive a t-shirt with their registration.
Computer Science (Programming and Game Development)
Computer Science (Web Design, Robotics, and AI)
We surf the web all the time; have you ever wondered how it is created? This minor will focus on Web design and Web development through an introduction to HTML/CSS and JavaScript. It will also offer a fun project that will incorporate principles of robotics and artificial intelligence. This program will be based in hands-on instruction in each of these areas and give participants the opportunity to explore a potential career and learn valuable skills while having fun and making new friends.
ENERGY - A STEAM-based Approach
Participants will experience “hands on,” directed activities that will explore basic concepts in physics and chemistry. Lessons and activities will focus on Newton’s laws of motion, the fundamentals of chemical reactions and energy transformations. Participants will engage with multiple lab-based experiences including Rube-Goldberg constructions (potential & kinetic energy), build-your-own circuits (electrical energy), and rubber bands & popper toy analysis (elastic potential energy).
Fine Art (Sculpture, Painting, Artifact Creation)
In this major, students will learn how to develop their natural talent and explore their creative side through an exploration of multiple types of sculptural design. Students will explore and work on the basics of acrylic painting.
Fine Art (Traditional and Digital Drawing)
In this minor, students will cultivate their creativity by exploring the many facets of drawing through both traditional and digital media.
Theater (Major)
Participants will have the opportunity to work on their onstage skills through various acting techniques and activities. Students will create an original character, explore various monologues, scenes, and skits, provide and receive constructive feedback on acting choices, and work towards informal performances throughout the week.
Theater (Minor)
Participants will explore their creativity in a safe and encouraging environment through various improvisational and theatrical games in order to gain confidence onstage (and off!). Skills such as focus, spatial awareness, active listening, storytelling, and basic acting techniques will be incorporated into all activities throughout the week.
Video Production
This course will introduce you to the basics of producing the various materials needed for a successful broadcast. Through Adobe’s Photoshop and After Effects programs students will learn the fundamentals of graphic design and animation. iMovie will be used to introduce students to video editing and production. Finally, near the end of the class, students will head to the Broadcast Studio to demonstrate their work during a live stream.
Creative Writing (Major)
Participants will be given the opportunity for both fun writing exercises while also working on their own original poetry and/or fiction pieces. Students will grow comfortable in a workshop setting as they learn how to give and receive insightful feedback while discussing one another’s work in a safe and supportive space.

Campers will be given the opportunity for both fun writing exercises while also working on their own original poetry and/or fiction pieces. Campers will also work on reading a variety of pieces in order to gain inspiration for their own works.
Chess
Dive into the exhilarating world of chess, designed for enthusiasts of all levels, from eager beginners to seasoned players. This course offers a dynamic blend of instruction and play, ensuring participants not only refine their understanding of chess fundamentals but also master advanced strategies and tactics. Each session is tailored to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and the joys of intellectual challenge.
Participants will embark on a comprehensive journey through the game of chess, starting with the core objectives and moving onto intricate checkmate patterns, special moves, and strategic planning. Our curriculum emphasizes a fun-filled yet educational approach, incorporating engaging activities like tactical puzzles, team competitions, and individual challenges to foster a competitive spirit and camaraderie among participants.
Broadcast Journalism & Podcasting
Broadcast journalism is the field of news that is shared using electronic methods such as radio, cable, and internet. In this course students will learn how news is reported online through written word and photography. Activities will include creating an online “program newsletter” as well as a podcast based on the student’s personal interest.

Principles of Rocketry
Have you ever tried to solve a problem and have been told, "It's not rocket science" - Well sometimes, it is! Come engage in an inquiry-based introduction to the mechanics of rockets. Participants will take part in a hands-on approach to the many different aspects of rockets, including forces, weight, thrust, lift, and wing design.
FAQ
Participants should wear casual comfortable clothes and shoes. T-shirts, shorts, and sneakers are ideal. Revealing clothing is not allowed. In addition, students are encouraged to bring a sweatshirt each day since they will be in an airconditioned environment.
Majors and minors will be held mostly in classrooms, labs, and our theater. Each of these areas is air conditioned and provides appropriate space for students to learn, have fun, and interact. Participants will also, on occasion, move outside for activities and experiments. Students will eat lunch in the student cafeteria, which is also air conditioned.
After registering, you will be sent an email with details about each class. In general, all necessary equipment will be provided.

Since we seek to keep major and minor sizes low, registration will close as each specific activity reaches capacity. We encourage participants to register early to secure their preferred majors and minors.
We anticipate being able to run all activities but do reserve the ability to cancel a particular major or minor if there is insufficient registration. We will inform parents of potential cancellations by June 15th and work to place them in alternatives in order of preference.
Students should bring a pre-packed lunch in a lunchbox that is labeled with their name and able to keep contents cold and fresh. They will keep this with them during the morning and bring it to lunch with them.
Yes, an assortment of drinks and snacks will be available for purchase from a canteen during lunch.
Student personal cell phone is highly discouraged. Students will be permitted to keep phones with them but expected to have them away for the duration of each program session. During lunch we will encourage participants to engage in conversation with their peers.
Participants may be dropped off starting at 8:45 AM and pick up will being at 3:00 PM. Students must identify the caregiver picking them up and each caregiver must be on file and provide a valid picture ID if requested. We are not able to provide transportation but we are conveniently located one block from the Briarwood subway station and close to the Kew Gardens interchange.
