Athletic Awards Ceremony Honors Top Athletes

On May 23rd, Molloy celebrated the achievements of its outstanding student-athletes during its annual Athletic Awards Ceremony. Organized by the Athletic Director Mr. Mike McCleary, Student-athletes from each JV and Varsity team were recognized for their performance and contributions to their team throughout the 2022-23 season.

Athletes were eligible to receive several different awards. The Coach’s Award spotlights a talented athlete whose heart and camaraderie makes them an invaluable member of their team. The MVP Award honors the top overall athlete on a team, who may have broken records, qualified for states, or exhibited leadership qualities. The Scholar Athlete Award recognizes four-year athletes who excel in the classroom while achieving an excellent GPA. The Curran Award is presented to the top overall male and female athlete annually. This year also marked the first time the Firefighter Timothy Klein ’08 Scholarship was awarded to an outstanding male and female athlete. The Firefighter Timothy Klein ’08 Scholarship

On April 24, 2022, Firefighter Timothy Klein, Class of 2008, lost his life in the line of duty. Tim played both soccer and basketball at Molloy. In Tim’s honor, the Klein family has started a scholarship that will provide tuition assistance to two rising juniors, one male and one female. The students receiving this scholarship were nominated by their coaches for demonstrating qualities that Tim personified.

The Outstanding Senior Athlete Awards

The Outstanding Senior Athlete Award is presented to the best male and female athletes in the senior class. The award is named after Coach Jack Curran, the baseball and basketball coach at Molloy for 55 years. It is known as The Curran Award.

This year’s male recipient is a four-year varsity player. He was the captain of his team. He was the Team MVP for the past three years. He has reached the States all four years in multiple events. He holds three school records. He won his League’s MVP for the last two years. He is committed to swim for the Naval Academy Prep School Next year. Congratulations to the 2023 male recipient of The Curran Award: Matthew Beehler ‘23.

This year’s Female recipient is also four-year varsity athlete and the captain of her teams. She was named All-League an astonishing 14 times. She holds nine school records. She was an 8-time B/Q Champion, A one-time City Champion. She has also qualified for the NYS Federation 4-times and was a 3-time National Qualifier. As a soccer player she led her team in scoring as a junior and senior. She was named All League as a junior and a senior. She has a chance to add to these numbers this weekend as she competes in the Intersectional Championships. She is committed to competing in track and field at Marist College next year.
